A blog about the latest soccer news, best players, transfer talk and anything else about the world game, with a heavy focus on the Selecao and Inter Milan!
I learnt of some very sad news today. That Ronaldo was injured again, but this time very seriously and possibly even career ending.
During Milan’s 1-1 draw with Livorno, Ronaldo was brought on and in three minutes had collapsed after leaping to meet a cross. The Milan doctors have officially reported that he ruptured his rotulian ligament in his left kneecap. He was stretchered off the field and was clearly in a lot of pain, probably mentally as much as physically. The Livorno keeper was nearby when it happened and reported hearing a horrible sound, like a bang. I had the same dreadful feeling as watching him in 1999 and 2000 when he was at Inter and his right knee gave way. It’s been said that the injury he has suffered this time could take 9 months to a year to heal.
Milan have stated they will stay close to Ronaldo and aren’t about to abandon him. Ronaldo put himself on the line to earn a penalty and a point for Milan and hopefully he can still recover and give something back to Milan and Serie A. Both Galliani and Ancelotti are hoping for the best and his team mates were off to see him in hospital as soon as the match ended so he’ll definitely be well supported.
They expect Ronaldo to see the same surgeon who operated on his right knee in 99-00. The surgeon is in Paris and Ronaldo left early this morning, receiving applause from fans outside the hospital. The head of Milan’s medical team gave details on how it may have occurred. He said Ronaldo was hit from behind and probably lost balance on his standing leg. He said that the striker had complained about his knee all year but it wasn’t bad enough to prevent training. He was quick to say however that he does not believe it to be a career-ending injury. I sure hope he’s right.
Highlights of the match are below and the injury occurred about three and a half minutes into the footage. It’s not for the weak of heart. We wish you all the best Ronnie!
Nike have officially launched their latest viral ad campaign at the site www.whoisthefastest.com (which redirects to a skysports page with a feel much like the usual nikefootball.com site). The ad puts Aaron Lennon and Gabriel Agbonglahor through their paces on a test circuit where they have to weave through slalom poles with and without the ball.
It seems like it will be a challenge to anyone who thinks they can beat the pair in another well planned campaign that is sure to attract a lot of attention. Check out the website for the videos although I found the raw footage more interesting to watch as it was less flashy. You can find that over at SoccerLens.
Lennon was fastest overall but Agbonglahor was faster in getting to the ball. I’ve embedded the same videos from SoccerLens for your viewing pleasure.

So I finally put in an order for a pair of Nike Mercurial Vapor IVs today after spending some time trying to decide what boots to get next after my Nike Mercurial Vapor IIIs finally started to show signs of wear and probable failure some time not too far away. The IIIs have pretty much been the only boot I’ve used for the last two years (and I don’t have an off-season as I keep playing friendlies the year through). They’ve held up like no other boot I’ve had, usually I only get a year out of a boot and need to fix them up regularly with araldite (don’t laugh, it’s great stuff!). The IIIs required no maintenance and almost always cleaned up like new, although some challenges left marks that no amount of scrubbing could remove.
My only complaint is perhaps they were more durable than my feet! I’d end up with blisters on my toes, heels and balls of my feet if I didn’t use band-aids or strapping constantly. Perhaps I should follow in Christiano Ronaldo’s footsteps (sorry, bad pun) and wear some shoes that are two sizes smaller (I kid you not, read the article). Apparently your touch is a lot better which I guess makes sense but I’m not about to ruin my feet for a better feel of the ball. I have a friend that wears shoes a size smaller than usual although he tells me that the leather usually accommodates this after a short while and moulds much better to your feet. He’s a small, scrawny guy but has one of the most powerful kicks I’ve seen and can dip the ball like no one I know so I’m sure he knows what he’s on about.
Anyways I’ve got a pair of anthracite/vivid blue vapors (mostly black looking, the orange was a bit loud for me) probably a week away and can’t wait to try them out. I’ll be sure to report how I find them, just with I could’ve grabbed those Mercurial SLs but the price was a little insane. Hope I made the right choice as I haven’t actually tried a pair out and I was pretty pleased with the Adidas powerswerve’s I tried out recently but I’ve generally preferred Nikes so I’m not to worried.
I had the chance to try out a pair of the new Adidas predator powerswerve boots today. I haven’t used a pair since the predator pulse boots from a couple of years ago that I own but I was pleasantly surprised with the powerswerves. They’re part of the new Adidas range along with the adiPURE boots in use by Kaka’ and Gerard.
Although I wasn’t able to use them during a match as they belonged to the keeper on my team, I was able to get a bit of shooting practice in them. Until you put them on they’re quite flimsy and don’t feel like they’ll support the foot all that well but they are quite comfortable once laced up. They seem to have gotten the materials and design right on instep as the first thing you notice is a clean strike with good contact and excellent accuracy. The powerswerve does live up to it’s name as you can get some nice spin with them, it’s just a shame I couldn’t try them out with all the other important parts of the game. I still think I’m leaning towards the mercurial vapor 4s for my next boot but we’ll see, might try to borrow the powerserves for half a game. I’ve also heard that the new F50s are due out soon but they haven’t impressed me since switching to the tunit chassis. Nice concept but it doesn’t seem to work in my opinion.
The boots were created with help from Zidane after he finished uphis playing career at the 2006 world cup. That says a lot about the boot and that you should expect excellent control as he was one of the best trappers of the ball in the game. Apparently the powerswerve can impart 8% more swerve and 3% more power than the previous predator. It builds on the same golf and tennis technology utilised on the predator pulse by adding well-placed weight to the front of the boot for extra power.
Enjoy some Kaka’, Gerard and Messi silliness in the ad below.

Found an interesting video post on ballhype about the new EA sports game, FIFA street 3. Now I’m not much of a FIFA street fan or in fact any of the EA sports soccer games (Always preferred the perfect controls and movement of winning eleven over the arcadey feel of EA’s FIFA series) but this ad is dope. The moves are insane but look really cool and it’s quite a creative ad. Let the viral marketing continue.
There was only one goal in last nights friendly held in Dublin and it was the in form Robinho, given the nourishment to shine under Schuster’s Madrid. Brazil held most of the possession throughout the match but did not find the net until 67 minutes as Ireland held up to their attacks. A pin-point accurate finish as the ball was slotted through legs, defenders, keeper and far post. Check out the goal highlights below (excuse the dodgy music).
Italy defeated Portugal 3-1 last night in Zurich and although it was a friendly, they proved that they mean business for this coming Euro as they chase the double which only France has managed so far in 1998 and 2000.
The first goal came right before half-time as Toni converted a Grosso cross. Soon after the restart, Pirlo found the net through a deflected strike. Quaresma was able to pull one back on 76 minutes but no sooner had the celebrations ended that Italy had restored it’s two goal advantage through Quagliarella. Check out the action in the highlights below.
Goals from Josh Kennedy, Tim Cahill and Marco Bresciano were more than enough to see off Qatar in Melbourne today. Their 2010 campaign is off to a flying start with the convincing win at Telstra dome.
All the goals were scored in the first half starting with Josh Kennedy who towered above the Qatar defense to place a header into the lower right of the goal from an Emerton cross. Seven minutes later it was Tim Cahill who rose up with a header of his own and finally Bresciano side footed a beauty into the net off a Scott McDonald ball.
Over 50,000 turned up to cheer on the Socceroos but on a sad note, Craig Moore stated that it would be his last game with the national side. Highlights below.
Found another post on ballhype about Beckham opening a soccer academy in Brazil. The video on that post seems to be down but I found the clip where he is juggling a ball on the beach, with no shirt on of course. Check out this post for some funny reading, it sure took me by surprise to see him in Brazil to open an academy. Maybe the really good players get kidnapped, kept out of the sun to reduce their tan and sent to England where they are promptly naturalised and added to the national team?
There’s another video below about Beckham opening the academy and his 100th cap for the national squad etc.
